Travelling with your dog, whether in Spain or elsewhere, obviously raises several questions, including the question of accommodation. Not everywhere accepts pets! Travelling myself sometimes with my dog in Spain, I thought I’d put together an article with a selection of great places to stay, spread across the country.
You’ll see, I’ve found some real gems, including some places genuinely designed and adapted for our four-legged friends (they’re the ones getting the best holiday of their life 😂). For me personally, this kind of place wouldn’t work because my dog is reactive around other dogs (yes, Dante may look like a sweetheart but he’s a little devil when he meets another dog).
I’m also sharing my filter tips and checks to help you find dog-friendly accommodation in Spain.
This article will kick off a series on the subject and the next one in the pipeline is a more general guide to travelling with your dog in Spain.
Hotels and clubs that welcome dogs in Spain
I’ve spotted several hotels in Spain that accept dogs and are also genuinely pleasant, both for exploring a region and for us humans (since we’re the ones paying at the end of the day).
Puerta de Algadir (Cádiz)
I’ll start with the last hotel I tested with my dog, very close to Cádiz, easily accessible by car, with a large courtyard and spacious rooms. I booked it before taking the ferry to Tenerife, to stay close to the city. It was a really pleasant surprise.
Dogs are allowed on request at no extra charge.
Hotel Ramis (Alicante)
Heading to the Costa Blanca with this very family-friendly hotel that welcomes dogs. Some rooms are specially designed for them (just add €19 for them and you’ll have a bowl and a mat provided). The beach and the Montgó Nature Reserve are only 5 km from the hotel — perfect for exploring the area.
Green Garden Eco Resort (Tenerife)
This hotel is proof that dog owners don’t have to settle for budget accommodation when travelling with their companion. Green Garden Eco Resort is located in South Tenerife and is a 4-star resort with private villas for 2 to 6 people. Given the standard of the hotel, your pet will be thoroughly pampered: basket, food bowl, water bowl and toys! But it comes at a price (€30 per DAY!).
Casa Grande Do Bachao
Off to Galicia, one of my favourite regions! In my case, I travelled there with Dante in a campervan, so I don’t have hotel experience there, but I found this place which ticks all the boxes: family-friendly, beautiful, peaceful and open to animals! They can even enjoy the hotel grounds, just like at home. It’s also very close to Santiago de Compostela, making it a great base for the region.
Hotel Noguera Mar (Alicante)
Back to Alicante, and more specifically to Dénia for this lovely seafront hotel. It accepts dogs for €10/day (dogs up to 20 kg ). Good to know: there’s a dog-friendly beach 10 minutes away by car. The area is also brilliant for hiking if you’re into that, while soaking up the sunshine.
Hotel Rural El Retiro de San Pedro by RetiroRural
The RetiroRural group offers villas, apartments and hotels all across Spain. The key feature? They’re set in a rural environment, close to the Sierra de Gredos — an incredible spot for hiking! If El Retiro hotel is on this list, it’s obviously because dogs are welcome!
ALEGRIA Sun Village (Lloret del Mar)
And no, Lloret de Mar isn’t just for partying! 🤭 It’s also great for the beach and the charming nearby villages. This 4-star hotel, right next to the beach and dog-friendly, seems like a brilliant option for travelling with a small dog (max 8 kg and €10/day).
SOHO hotels
I also noticed that the SOHO Boutique hotel chain, located all over Spain — in cities and beyond — is dog-friendly! However, while they accept dogs for a supplement of €12/day with bowl, toys, basket etc., only dogs up to 10 kg are accepted.
The best dog-friendly campsites in Spain
Wecamp campsites
Wecamp is a campsite chain present in several locations in Spain (and Portugal), offering a very comprehensive range with classic pitches but also glamping (tipis, domes, etc.)! I love their style.
A whole range of accommodation is pet-friendly (clearly indicated on the website with a filter). Even cats are welcome!
Taiga Resorts
Same concept as Wecamp for Taiga Resorts: campsites and glamping at several locations in Spain. They are very pet-friendly: dog toilet area, walking paths accessible directly from the accommodation. They charge €6/day per animal and allow 2 animals per family (which is rare and very welcome).
Places designed FOR dogs in Spain
I was amazed when I found these places — they’re designed specifically for dogs! They’re the ones getting the holiday of a lifetime haha.
Camping Natura Village Castello Mar
A dog owner’s dream: dog swimming pools, restaurant menu for them (yes really 😂), dog beach 600 metres from the campsite, agility area, etc. Absolutely wild! On top of that, the campsite is also pretty great for humans with bungalows, pitches and tent spots. It’s in Catalonia, very close to Roses, a beautiful town! All the info on their website.
Trust Resort Canino
Same vibe here: pool, play area, etc. and even “classes” for socialisation and training. It started out more as a dog centre but a campsite for families to enjoy, with chalets and lodges coming soon! Located in the Dénia area (Alicante).
Tips for finding dog-friendly accommodation
The “Pets” filter
This is the obvious starting point — most accommodation booking platforms offer this filter: Pets allowed.
Check the conditions
Once you’ve ticked that filter, you’ll have access to all the establishments that accept animals. That said, I’d recommend checking the actual conditions.
Some hotels charge an additional fee (I once paid €50 just for my dog at a hotel, and no, we didn’t even get a bowl in the room). On Booking or Hotels.com, it usually just says ‘a supplement may apply’. I’d advise going directly to the hotel’s website if it exists to check the supplement. That said, if like me you have Genius benefits, you can still book through Booking anyway.
Also, there are often weight restrictions: max 10, 12 or 20 kg. Worth knowing. Finally, in most cases, the dog won’t be allowed to stay alone in the room or get on the bed.
