Let’s explore the best surf spots in Spain.
Surfers of all levels
Zarautz - Basque Country
A popular surfing spot in the Basque Country, Zarautz is known for its consistent waves and fine sandy beach. Ideal for beginners, there are numerous surf schools on site.
La Zurriola - San Sebastian
Located in San Sebastian, in the Basque Country, La Zurriola is a popular beach for surfers because of its fast, powerful waves. The beach is also known for hosting numerous surfing events throughout the year. With relatively easy access to the water (the beach is located in the heart of the town), the spot is ideal for all levels.
Playa de Somo - Cantabria
Located in the Cantabrian region, this beach is renowned for its waves, which are suitable for all levels of surfers, making it a popular destination for beginners and intermediate surfers all year round!
I saw this course on Get your Guide, untested but well worth a look!
Playa Americas - Tenerife
The Canaries are a surfer’s paradise! And for all levels. As a beginner, the best place to practise surfing is probably Playa de las Amercias. There are plenty of surf schools to choose from.
I’ve tried out a beginner’s surf lesson for you!
It was the first surf lesson of my life! I didn’t manage to stand up, but I did catch a few waves on my knees.
All the conditions at Playa Americas were right for a good first surf session. I chose the KontraOla school via Manawa, my outdoor activity partner. We were a group of 6 in total, perfect for the instructor to have time to look after everyone. After a short debriefing session outside the water, we went straight into action. The lesson lasted 2 hours (we didn’t need a minute more, surfing is exhausting *sigh*), 1h30 of which was in the water. Everyone in the group had time to try and catch at least 8 or 9 waves.
If you’re going on holiday to Tenerife, I highly recommend it!
Price: €35/person (wetsuit included).
Tarifa - Andalusia
Located in the South of Spain, Tarifa is famous for its strong, steady winds, making it a popular destination for all board sports, especially surfing. There’s something for everyone in Tarifa.
Experienced surfers
El Quemao - Lanzarote
Located on the Canary island of Lanzarote, El Quemao is regarded as one of the best surf spots in Spain, with powerful tubular waves that attract experienced surfers. Located just opposite the fishing village of La Santa, you can also find a wide range of accommodation and restaurants, as well as surf schools to help you improve your skills.
Mundaka - Basque Country
Located in the Basque Country, Mundaka is considered one of the best surf spots in Europe (yes, really!), thanks to its famous left-hand wave and long ride distance. An expert level is recommended to tackle the waves of this incredible spot, which can reach heights of over 4 metres!
Pantin - Galicia
Located in Galicia, Pantin is considered one of the best straight waves in Spain, with waves up to 4 metres high, making it a popular destination for experienced surfers.
I hope that these surfing spots in Spain have inspired you to try out this board sport and have a great holiday!
