Chinchón

Chinchón is located around 45 minutes South of Madrid (+/- 45 km). Listed as one of the Pueblos más bonitos de España (one of the most beautiful villages in Spain), it’s an easy day trip by car from the capital. When you arrive, get ready to step back in time! Welcome to the era of Cowboy movies! Yes, the village is famous for its circular Plaza Mayor, which is covered in sand in summer, giving it the air of a cowboy village (Chinchón has been the setting for several Hollywood movies).

An unmissable visit just 55 minutes from Madrid (+/- 60 km)! Why unmissable? Located at the entrance to the Sierra de Guadarrama, this imposing monument is part of Spain’s national heritage, representing the country’s golden century (16th century) under the reign of Philip II. A few monks still live there today, but a large part of the monument can be visited. There is a charge for visits (free on Wednesday afternoons). This outing can be combined with the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen). This is a basilica built into the rock under Franco and a gigantic cross (which can also be seen from the motorway leading to it). Both are very impressive.

Alcalá de Henares

Located 40 minutes from Madrid (+/- 40 km), the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Also known as Ciudad del Saber (City of Knowledge), it is one of the first cities to have a university. The University of Alcalá de Henares was built in 1499, and for a long time rivalled that of Salamanca. The Archbishops’ Palace is also part of the group of monuments declared a World Heritage Site. Finally, don’t miss the Museum and Plaza de Cervantes, the famous author of Don Quixote.

Segovia

Just over 1 hour’s drive away (+/- 90 km), the city of Segovia is the ideal destination for a day or weekend away from the capital. Situated in the region of Castilla y León, Segovia is famous for its aqueduct, which was one of the largest in the Roman world. Some Madrilenians also go there to… eat cochinillo asado, the local (and delicious) speciality! And let’s not forget the Alcázar de Segovia, a real princess’s castle!

Toledo

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, Toledo is located 1h10 south of Madrid (+/- 70km), in the region of Castilla-La Mancha. It is nicknamed the “City of 3 Cultures” because it is still home to Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultural influences. Toledo is also the centre of Spain. If you come to Toledo, we recommend a visit to the French Gothic-style Cathedral of Santa Maria, where you will find numerous works by famous Spanish painters. Don’t miss the Alcazar of Toledo, now home to the Army Museum; the Saint Martin’s Bridge, classified as a national monument in 1921; and the Mirador del Valle, which offers a splendid panoramic view of the city.
